I was trying to clean out my icv as I have slight idle problems, but I cannot see where it is at all.

polaris448 is an unknown quantity at this point
that looks like it is it but move your arrow up and left a little bit and that should be it. it looks like it is covered. my manual shows it uncovered. the manual also states to test and make sure the tps is working correctly before going to the icv. hope that helps. to everyone else...does the m44 have the icv?

ok, how to I check that the throttle response sensor is working ok? And where is it located?

Also, what are the main areas to look for and clean out in a e36? eg. throttle body, air filter etc.

M42 Icv....

It should be that thing under the throttle cable elbow. It would have a direct connection to filtered air inlet tube and a hose coming out and going to the back side of the throttle body. Pull the air inlet tube off and see it you can see it a little better. I like Berryman's Chemtool spray (Walmart) for cleaning out the throttle body. Nothing cuts gunk better. Makes Gumout look like mouthwash.
I think what your arrow is pointing to is a hot water supply hose for the heater.
