Where is the block code in a e36 325i?

Well a friend of mine got a 92 325i and need to know how he can find out what motor he have. We thought it has a m50 motor but when parts arrive, it don't fit. Find out that the previous owner had another motor put in but don't know what was put in there!!! need someone to tell me how to tell what he got!! thanks in advance.

Look on the engine for any kind of serial numbers, codes, part numbers anything that may be in interest. I'd love to help you, but I can't simply look under your hood. From there google and phone calls are your friend. Good luck to you.

If it is a BMW engine, take a picture. I'm sure someone here would recognize what engine it is, or at least be able to narrow it down.

The serial number is located on the lower left side of the block, toward the front.
