when to shift?????

I have a 328IS. Every time i shift from first gear to second, the car gives a push forward. I usually shift when the RPM's are around 3000. Is this too soon??? I have notice that if i wait until 4000 RPM's it is a bit smoother but im afraid to have the RPM's that high every time i take off. Is that bad for the car?

when its cold try and shift when the rpms are lower...but once the car is warmed up its really up to you

yeah try to keep it under 4k before the engine is up to the right temp. in normal driving, shifting at real low rpms (2-2.5k) usually gives you the smoothest ride, but if you ever need some good power (for making a yellow or passing) its good to be over 3500 and probably shifting around 5k
