I have a 1996 318i . I was wondering what is the largest wheels i can put on it. In terms of width without it being too big and fitting properly

i'm not exactly sure about the 318i. but in general with e36, you may be able to get 17x7.5 all around. if you want staggered, 17x18.5 might fit in the rear.

i also have e36 and i managed to get 18x8.5 front, 18x9.5 rear, but with serious fender rolling in the rear. i can't say for sure if that will work with a 318i (i.e., wheel well depth and track).

mine is lowered slighlty and i run 17"s using 225/45x17 but you can get 18"s under there with out rolling.... but you will need to use a 225/40x18 tyre......

18x8 is the largest that will fit without/mininal rolling. 18x8.5 will definitly require rolling. For ride quality, cost, and control 17x7.5 or 8 are generally the best. Anything above 17 thens to add weight without increasing the footprint. Most tread styles available for 18s can be put on 17s too, and at a lower cost.
