What's that noise??? - BMW Forum

OK guys, I'm really starting to think this car is possessed

. After driving the car today, I parked in my garage just like always. I was looking through my toolbox and suddenly there was this very strange noise coming from the car. It sounds like a loud hissing/whistle. It kinda sounds like someone letting the air out of a tire or maybe a balloon. It lasted maybe 7 or 8 seconds then it stopped. I thought maybe it was a tire but they were all ok. I've heard this a couple of times before after driving but never really paid attention to it until now. I guess it sounded louder inside the quiet garage. All seems well with the car, I drive it 60 miles every day with no issues. What could making this noise? If it helps it seems to happen a few minutes after shutting off the engine. What do you guys think??

mine makes a few noises as soon as i turn it off, with the air con and god knws wht but i never really hang around for 15min afta i do it heh

Probably just pressure being relieved from the fuel tank

It's mroe than likely your air conditioner. I believe ALL BMW's do this. It's going through a process of shutting down the air conditioning unit, or some gibberish like that. Im almost sure it's this. Whenever I parked ina agarage it seemed almost too loud aswell. Next time you turn off your car notice that it is coming from your front vents.

maybe its a snake stuck in ur car, but yea it could be the A/C my car does this as well...

It is probably normal cool down noise. If the hissing is short like you say, it's probably normal activity. My car does this as well. As long as it isn't coming from a tire or is prolonged (i.e. for a minute instead of 10 seconds), it's probably just your car letting air out. You know. That contented sigh of a good drive.

Thanks to all that responded. I just moved the car from one side of my garage to the other to change oil and guess what?... it did it again. Since none of you think it's a big deal I just won't worry about it anymore. I'll just go with the response from 4evrwyntr. "Contented sigh from a good drive". That's what I'll call it from now on :lol: Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions down the road but for now at 173K, all is well.
