Over the summer i plan on working my ass off with 2 jobs and am gong to try and save up 4k to buy a 5 speed 92-93 325i. Do you think that i can get one in decent condition for around 4k? I currently drive a 85 528e which is about to fall apart due to massive rust, but after switching from a honda to a BMW i am hooked for life. Also from what iv gathered a 325i will be pretty dependable, is this true? Thanks in advance for any responces.

You can get a 325 2 door 5-speed with 120000 miles in good condition for about 4,000-4,500. I don't know how hyped up you are about buying cars off eBay, but if you go to the link below, it's not too bad. Check it out. Although, it is automatic. Just a thought.

Its gonna have higher mileage for that price. THe 92 is gonna be cheaper due to non vanos and a few other changes made in 93. The 3 series are a very dependable car.

I think it's hit and miss. A friend of a friend in town here found a Z3 for an incredibally good price. I think that's rare, however. 99% of all the ones I saw had a [n unknown] reserve bid, so it wasn't like you could actually bid and get it for 1/2 price or anything.

Combine that with not actually being able to see it and touch it and evaluate it, made it a no-go for me.

I'd say it's workable if you take your time, know how to work ebay, and most importanty, have a friend in the destination where the car is, who can actually check it out, to be sure that it in fact exists, and check on the condition. That's tough to do, however.

There's probably better bargains [with less risk] at local sheriff's auctions and estate sales. That was my experience, anyway.

I live in the milwaukee area in Wisconsin. I was also considering taking a road trip down south a little to get away from all the road salt us northerners use. Do you think this is going to be necessary for a 92-93 car?

I purchased my 1996 Black BMW 325i Sedan off of Ebay. I payed around 7,000 and I have put over 3,000 miles on it thus far with no problems. I did of course do the standard tune-up (just as anyone should do when purchasing any used vehicle) and changed the tires since I wanted a set of after market rims, but besides those optional expenses I havn't spent a dime since buying it.

I say go for it.

Just make sure you look into the seller AND the vehicle quite extensively.

Same here. I had been looking for a 1998 323is Coupe manual for God knows how long. Everyday I would search cars.com, autotrader.com and eBay. I had my money ready to go and everything for the best opportunity. I was willing to spend about $13,500 max. Anyway, my dad knew I was in the market for a bimmer and one day he e-mailed me a link to a black 98, just what I wanted, that was for sale on eBay. The guy that was selling it just had a baby with his wife and had to get rid of it ASAP. It's Buy It Now price was $11,500. I just e-mailed the guy and told him I could have it off his hands in 3 days for $11,000. He took the offer and I used the extra money I saved to get the 18" 2004 M3 rims. I bought the HELLA HID conversion kit (that I have yet to install) and now my car is exactly what I wanted. I would say eBay is a safe bet as long as the person checks out, as well as the VIN and pictures. I saved a crap load and got car that I wanted with 66,000 on it. Perfect.

I think it still falls into the "right place, right time" category. i.e .hit and miss.

Ideally, you want to be the only one bidding on the car. The more people that know about the auction, obviously the more people that may show up looking for the same thing as you. I think it's possible to get a real good deal, but I think it takes lots of driving around and finding lots of auctions to find what you want, where you don't have 40,000 other people bidding on it to drive up the price.

I think [sheriffs and other] auctions are totally relevant to your marketplace. As a place to start, all it takes is a little leg work and a little time to check them out.

I got a tip on an estate auction happening up here soon. Word through the grapevine is that there will be something there worth bidding on. I'm planning to check it out, in hopes of getting an opportunity to get something I can resell very quickly for a small profit. ('94 3 series.)

But as I say, if there's another dozen people at the same auction all bidding on the same item, it won't be a bargain... we'll see.

Good story. B)

Congrats on working the good deal! That's the best way to buy a used car, for sure...

I bought a car through eBay about 6 months ago. It is a 93' 325i with an M3 body conversion, 101k miles and I paid about 9k for it. It was a good deal considering how good the car looked and the upgrades (See picture below). I was very careful to make sure I wasn't being ripped off before buying. But, the car was in another state and I couldn't check it out physically. I spoke with the BMW mechanic at the dealership who checked the car out and he gave me the thumbs up on it's service history and condition. But after 2 months, here's what went wrong:

Heater hose ruptured
Oil filter housing had a hole that was glued shut and began leaking badly
Transmission malfunctioned regularly and required an EPROM upgrade
Valve cover gasket leaking
Spark plug boots were torn and taped together with electrical tape
All 6 ignition coils needed to be replaced
Front Ball Joints
Front Control Arm Bushings
Rear Shock Mounts
Rear Trailing Arm Bushings
Rear Camber Arms bent
Car was lowered too much and rear wheels rubbed - this caused a blowout on wheels the seller claimed had 50% tread left.
Driver's door handle switch and door lock actuator

Here's what the seller told me needed to be replaced (what I knew ahead of time):
Passenger seat adjustment switch
Sunroof relay

All I remember is the seller saying he would accept a bid cancellation only if I picked up the car and something significant was wrong. It drove back (from Las Vegas to Sacramento - 8 hrs) fine. But it took about 2 months for all the problems to surface, and when they did the BMW dealership wanted about $5500 to do the work. I spent the next 4 months with the car garaged in order to fix the problems myself in my spare time for $1100 worth of parts.

I just want you to know, there is definitely a risk with buying a car through eBay. This is a must --> Make sure you have the car throughly checked out before you buy it. This can be difficult if the car is in another state - But this is no excuse. It is better to play it safe. Ask as many questions as you can before even thinking about it. Check the car out yourself before buying. If you are getting a good deal on eBay, make sure to figure travel and vehicle inspection costs into your budget. Fly down there and take a few days to check the car out. This is what I would recommend. But maybe I'm being too cautious.
