whats it do and how does it work

auto transmission on my 94 318i has a swtich with an A and an M...whats it for and what does it do...im assuming it means auto and manual...but hows it work or how do i use it? very confused...used:

a ha! make that 4 threads we're chatting now miguel.

yeah auto and automanual. basically gives you the option of shifting like you would a manaul transmission, without the clutch, and thus, without the FUN.

lol...yea 4 threads...i know how to drive standard and must say its awesome...i got an auto cus i learnd standard after i got my 318, obviously when shift in a standar u let go of the gas and step on the clutch...on my auto when using the auto manual thing...how that work do i let go fo the gas shift then accelerate again?

yeah it's basically what you want. the theory of the automatic is that it's mechanically and computer timed to shift at the best time possible, and although not a lot of people like to admit it, they can't shift better than an auto because there's no way of knowing without basically having an engine read out with you in the car. i used to do it from time to time in my dad's 740il, only because of the bad weather when i would stay in gears 1-3. so when you do shift, i would let off the gas a bit because you don't want to be screwin around with your engine. you don't have to hit the brake either ( i don't think you asked that but anyway), you just shift up and down as you drive..while of course paying attention to your rpms
