whats the difference between all the different models? Is a 323 is better than an i?

There are only a 323i and 323is. "i" is the sedan, "is" is the coupe.

323's are as slow and heavier than a 4 cyl 318, plus insurance is probalby higher than a 318 since it's 6 cyl. 323's are a de-tuned 325, and no, it's *NOT* cost effective to take a 323 and tune it back to 325 spec. It may be cheeper if you are overhauling the entire car for hardcore race prep and rebuilding the engine since it's the same 2.5L block that the 325's have.

Go for a 325 or 328 if you can. The 323 is no less of a car than the 325, it's just got less power. Same chassis, same suspinsion, restricted engine.

here's a related question...is there any difference between the 98 323 is and the 99?

I can't find any information as to what, if any changes were made to the car.

I think it was the same car, not sure if the 323 was the e46 body style for '99, but I know it still had 168hp.
