hey guys the subject pretty much sums it up i need some help i havent learned this yet! And how do you know if you car has this? i was looking at parts for 325 and it said with vanos, how can u tell if it doesnt have it? i just need some info!
vanos did not exist until the 1994 model year. So if you have an m50 motor that is 1992 or 1993, it is non-vanos. As you can see in the picture I attached, this is how you can visually see if the engine is vanos or not. If this part isn't on an engine, it is not vanos.

For Sale
1987 325is body
1995 325 motor
Performance upgrades: Genie headers, BMP cams, full custom exhaust (dual 2 1/4", mandrel bent, stainless), K&N filter
Other upgrades: Sony deck, Sony 10-disc changer, sony 6x9's, high end alarm (keyless entry, motion sensors, logic sensor, etc.)
it depends what your goal is for your car. if you plan on staying NA (naturally aspirated) then definately go for a vanos. If you plan on putting a big turbo or sc, it is much more difficult to tune a vanos car (but not by any means impossible).

Vanos is variable cam timing. If you look at the top of the red circle in that pic, there is a big solendoid there, and a plug wire on the end behind the head, which you can't see in that pic.
On that engine, it's just the intake cam that is changed, but on the new engines, both cams are variable.
oh thanks el presidente that helps so i dont even have to worry about it! kind of a relieft but im still stuck with a 4 banger for a year! haha oh well its a bimmer! but the 325s and 328s come with vanos too right? cuz u just said m3! but yeah im not sure about the m3 i might just go with a 25 or 28 but the m would be nice we will see when the time comes!

I stand corrected with vanos in 1993.
MAXI - the 1991 325i was a m20 motor. Those never had vanos. Unless he has transplanted another motor into it.
