I am getting ready to buy a 1993 325is and here lately I have been noticing that there are E36 and E46 and all this other technical termes. Can anyone please tell me what that means and which one I more than likely have in my 1993 325is.

Thanks
Matt

Hmmm...

e36 is the chassis designation for the 92-99 3 series.
e46 is the chassis designation for the 99-present 3 series.

Your 325is will have a 2.5 liter DOHC inline-6.

Most of the BMW engines are 6 cylinders (2.0 (euro), 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2) and there are also a few 4 cylinders (1.6 and 1.8, 1.9). Further has BMW V8's, the new V10 (M5) and V12's.

the 1993 E36 3series which is what you have uses an in line six cylinder engine with a twin cam ie 24 valves. In september 1993 BMW introdeuced vanos intoo the engine which varies the valve timing giving much betteer low down torque than the non variable valve model. If possible find out under the bonnet or hood as you guys in the states call it for the build date. Models built september 1993 onward have the variable valve timing. I have owned 12 different E36's and there is a noticable difference in power between the engines when it comes to in gear acceleration and over taking. Hope this helps Ali-bumble Scotland

I'll agree... the M5- line engine.. was the greatest.... either the M50 or the M52... both of the same engineer.
