What«'s wrong with the vanos valve

I have a 1995 325 cinvertible model and a noise appeared recently when engine is running at certain speed. After some research on the net i found that the VANOS valve could be worn or in trouble. The noise, like a chain noise is located close to the valve cover at the front of the engine. My neighbourg also bouth rencently a BMW 325 1992 and get the same problem. What should i do? Is it easy to fix it by myself by replacing some part or i have to go somewhere to get itfixed ? the BMW dealer or otherwise?

If it is the chain noise usually heard when the engine recoils down to the lower RPMs then it is your venos unit, i have the same problem and have talked to some people. its not so much the changing the part that is the problem... if you are good with engines its the part, 500$, if you find a cheaper one let me know, then ill do all the work and tell you the kinks in it before you get into it to far.
