What engines do you recommend?

In the E36 3-Series, what engines do you guys like?
The 4 cyl looks alright because of the way gas is now!

i have a 1.8. I get great mileage considering my driving style and location. My morning and afternoon commute regularly puts me in stop-and-go traffic with occasional spurts of 70-100mph. I get around 400-450 miles in a tank.

thats not bad actually, but what type of car is it? 318?

if you are looking to save a few mpg bmw might not be the way to go... get a hybrid car for gas milage, and a bmw for pure performance driving

if gas is a big concern for u get a 318i/is/ti '96 or later when they increased it from a 1.8 to 1.9. not blinding fast by any means, but with a 5 spd its still pretty quick and fun as hell to drive

Yea...250 are you noticing that everyone else get better gas mileage than you... you might want to check into that.... might be a problem... does your car smoke out the ass end?.... JT325is?

That price, the car was something like a 95. 358 or 325is? I think it was an IS, but not a 318 anywyas. nice car!

In my 96 318i I get 500kms in the city per tank full.
From Victoria to Calgary I was able to go 730kms between fill ups, but that was really stretching it. I use 89 octane.
With 83,000 kms the 1.9 litre engine is not as powerful as the 325 or 328, but is very smooth and of course there is no way the 2.5 or 2.8 litre engine will come close to getting the same gas consumption.

My first tank to the light coming on was 652km.. but I have heard of 850km on a tank. I am very happy with my 5spd and 4cyl.. I recommend it.. I never think about the gas price anymore..

because of the way i drive i dont get very good milege, i have a 320i and get bout 250-300mpg but i also have a LPG gas tank fitted in the car that gets me about 500mpg.

all depends on the way you drive.
