what does this part do? BMW1730682

First Thanks for all your help putting my 325 together. I have worked on e30s before but not e36. Yesterday I developed a major coolant leak there is some kind of temp sensor on the air box never seen anything like this just 2 coolant lines no electrical connections. One of the inlets broke off and was dumping coolant part number on it is bmw1730682 what is this? I had 2 get home and just put a piece of copper tubing between the coolant lines and bypassed the switch. will I kill the engine by doing this? what is this part don't know what to ask for Thanks for your help

I tried to cross it to that number and I did get a thermostst but looked totally different. This piece goes into the intake air box and has 2 small coolant lines going to it but no electrical or vaccum connections will it hurt to bypass it?

It's the auxiliary water thermostat for the throttle housing, mounted in the air filter box. You shouldn't bypass it.
