[B]Ive got a 97 328ia, and when you press the M you drop your shifter all the way into the 1 at the bottom and it is kind of like a manual shift, but my car also has the M3 gearbox option so it might be a little different on yours, but if you leave your car in Drive and press M youre technically running your car constantly in 4th gear-ish. But if you do it right and you drop it into M and shift yourself you get a much faster ride...but A is Automatic and M is Manual...hope that covers it all!!!
I wonder whats the difference if you have it on A, and you shift gears.
It seems like the same as having it on M and shifting gears.
Someone correct me if Im wrong, cause it seems like there really is no need for switching it between A and M.
I used to switch gears when I had my Automatic 1990 Chevy Cavalier, and it did not have any buttons to switch between auto or manual whatsoever.
On another note: There should be an online manual. Does anyone know of any place to source it on the net cause if you go to the bmw website, they only go back to 2000 manual.
Search the forum for "manual button". there was a good thread on it where I explained everything.

Only in earlier models. Mine shifts into 4th just fine. (I have 98)

it locks it in gear. wont automatically shift out.
i actually used it for the first time!!!
hit the m.. and put the car in 3rd! then hit the gas.. very poor acceleration hence, your starting in 3rd gear... but if u put it in third and hit the gas in snow, it give better traction, so that you don't slide into things...

I have a 98 328 and i use the M button all the time, but it tends to drive me insane since the gears take wayyyy to much time to change. Leads to a lot of over-revving.

I think I've experience the reverse of this. On a dry flat road I put it in 3rd at M mode and my car took off like a bat outta hell! But I found that I accelarated faster but my handling felt less firm on the road. But my car accelarated smoother than in A mode at D gear.
What I can say is that I've experienced exactly what you did only thing is I had my car at 2nd or 1st gear and in M mode and acceleration was almost zero (slow) but I felt as if the tires were gripping the road and pulling the car as if driving on snow or up a steep slippery hill.
