I know this is going to sound like a stupid question in my 94 325is there is a button that has the letters A and M. I don't know what it does. when i press it the letters light up depending on which side of the button i press. Nothing else happens.
I forget exactly, pretty sure the m stands for "manual mode" allows you to move the selector through the numbered gears, a probably just stands for "automatic" something, it's an automatic I wouldn't really worry about it
yes, you have a Steptronic Automatic Transmission.....this basically means in M mode, it allows you to upshift & downshift manually........ A BMW feature......

When in manual mode, the car wont downshift. So if you leave it manual mode and forget about it. When pulling away from a red light you will be in 4th.
A is basicall the same thing when upshifting but downhifting it will do on its own not matter where the shifter is positioned. Hope that helps
