anything from 93and newer. 1992 models did not have vanos, 1993 was the first year it was used.

I have a '92 325i. The specs say 93's have the same peak Hp and torque even with Vanos and an extra half point of compression ratio (10.5 vs 10.0). Check here for the data: BMW E36 US Specs Page

The 0-60 times I have seen do not show the 93 being faster than the 92's, so I am confused. Acceleration times only improve in 96, with the 328's and their increased displacement and torque...


What is the real world benefit?

it is easier for the engine at low speeds to make due to variable valve adjustments made by the vanos system, as well as better feul economy and smoothes out idle speed.

Also, the 92's have higher rpms for peak torque numbers, 4500 for 92 and 4000 for 93. Dyno charts are fun.

And the 93+ have higher gains with a chip, and also start with a couple ft/lbs of torque.

They're only really different in the lower rpm range, have you ever noticed how your torque curve picks up A LOT at 3k? well with the '93s they smoothed that out a tad.

Also, better economy as stated earlier.
