Weird Electrical Problem

1993 318i 4dr

Hi guys. I have a very weird problem with my driver power window. It stopped working a while back and occasionally I press the button and it works for a few seconds, then stops working again. Switches/motors are all getting power and seem to be working fine.

But the weird thing is, my dome center light is not working either (bulb is fine I checked) and today when I turned the dome light switch on or leave it in the center position the power window would work perfectly and when I turned them off the window would no longer work again. Until I turned off my car and tried again after it no longer worked.

Does anyone know what it could be that affects both dome light and driver power window? Some kind of relay? All my fuses are fine.

Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you may have an issue with your comfort relay. This module affects lights, power windows/sunroof, switches, etc. Run a search for it (here or just on Google, "E36 Comfort relay"). I'm pretty sure that is what is wrong with your car.

My car does not have an alarm system. And I also removed the comfort relay and wired a direct connection through the slots on the holes, all the windows worked, except for my drivers. Relay also appears to be in very good condition so I think we can rule that out.

On another note, I removed fuse #33 (power window fuse) and the windows would still work. Could the previous owner have rewired the windows somewhere else?

Keep in mind that motors, relays and solenoids need a ground as well as voltage to engage/work.
