I have no clue what happened today at the pump so someone may have an idea of what happened....
i was on empty (range read 23 miles) so i went to get gas on my way home from school, i decided that i was only going to put $10, so i did. So im done putting in my $10 worth of gas, and i start my car and drive off, a few blocks later i look down and realize that my gauge is still on empty used i pull into a parking lot and turn my car off and on a couple of times and still nothing. I drive back to the station and go inside and tell the lady that i didn't get any gas for my $10. she comes outside with me and looks at my gaudge to make sure its still on empty, which it still was, then tells me to get $5 from another pump to see if that makes my gauge go up any. i put $5 in then start my car and it immediately went to half a tank wtf? It usually takes $10 to get half a tank for my car, so now ive payed $15 for half a tank and im still not happy so i talk her into giving me $5 worth gas for free. So basically was my gauge just delayed that much? should i go get anything checked? im just confused.

my personal experience with another car is that when you don't practice gassing up full tank, residue may develop on the sensor that is dipped into the tank. if this happens, it may not send the right signal to the guage even if in fact you have put some in.
try to fill it up and refill it whenever it goes half. that should clean the sensor.
somethime sensors get stuck.....in some cars the gague is controlled by a float type thing (like in a toilet) and they stick sometimes causing incorrect readings.

I almost ran out of gas today.... managed 11 miles after it said 0 miles left...
finally found a gas station....
$2.69 a gallon for 91 octane (I live in San Diego, CA where they rape us on gas prices)
I put $8 (all I had on me) in the tank.... I got 2.973 gallons.....
average price in san diego right now is $2.55 for 91...
in los angeles it's 10-20 cents less last I saw.... ghead

Man I could happily live with those prices. Over here in the UK we are paying in excess of $7 a Gallon ( 4.55 litres). So to fill up my car it's around the $85 mark.
Stop complaining guys, you could be living inthe UK !!!!!!
I had the same thing happen after they changed the seal on the top of the tank @ the fuel pump. They put the sensor in on a slight angle and then it would stick and only indicate a half tank when it was actually full. Quick reinstallation and all was well.
Wow...that sucks Darrell...how much do you drive though? Does that $85 last you a couple of weeks? Or are you driving every day? I put about 1000 miles on my car in a month. At your prices, I would have to spend $280/month just to get to work and run some errands. Is this the same for you? If so, you should sell that Bimmer and get something more frugal!
I'm doing about 60 miles a day ( 16-1700 per month) so over a month I probably use about 7-8 tanks of petrol which equates to something like $600-700 (£325-£380)per month.
I don't have a job where I drive around a lot, if I'm travelling it's normally by plane otherwise I'm pretty much stuck to my seat in the office.

damn... where are you buying your gas? I'll move there!
anyway....
I should probably add to the original thread too....
I know whenever I put anything less than 89 in my 96 318i, the fuel gauge would literally die.... just drop all the way over to the left like the car was off.... and it wouldn't read the level at all until I put in at least a full tank of 91... and after I went through a quarter of a tank it would register again.... if I put in 89... it would take a whole tank to start working again. BMW replaced the fuel senders and everything except the tank itself twice, and it still does it to this day... I finally learned to just not put anything less than 89 in it... (which btw is the minimum listed from the factory, but in my mom's 2000 528i, she can put 87... wtf?)
The manual for my '92 325i says it's fuel tank holds 17 US Gallons / 65 liters of fuel. The Internet says, the average cost of a US Gallon of gas, in the US is $1.94. so, 17 US Gallons x $1.94 US Dollars is $32.98. If some can fill their tank for $23 like BMWbeauty416, then they are getting gas for about $1.35 a US Gallon.
WTF?
Here is a link to a chart that compares the average price of Gas in the US vs Canada: Click Here
You can put a link in your Sig like I have to automatically display your local gas prices. If you want, go to www.(yourcityname)gasprices.com then scroll down to the bottom right corner of the screen. If you don't have a website for your city, you can use www.(yourstatename)gasprices.com or www.(yourprovincename)gasprices.com. For example, since I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I go to www.calgarygasprices.com and www.albertagasprices.com... The rest they say, is up to you...
it cost me about $38 for 91 at Costco. Gas in SoCal cost way too much!!
as for the UK, you guys have a good metro system that takes you everywhere. I would use that if i could then drive my car on the weekends. But you are getting bent over with those gas prices.
