VANOS (Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung) is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by BMW. VANOS varies the duration of the intake valves by moving the fulcrum of the camshaft. BMW recently began offering "double" VANOS, which operates on the exhaust camshaft as well, on a number of its cars.

everything 93 and up had vanos i think... 92 did not

I credit SpeedInfusion for that definition!

Yep, advances the cam at low rpms. Gives more torque down low without lessening the top end rush. I don't believe 318's had the VANOS.

as far as i know, none of the 1992 models had vanos, and tomctx suggested that 318's may not even have vanos period. any comfirmation on that? interesting!

yea 318s dont have teh vanos....and btw the only 325 e36's that didnt have vanos were made before 6/92...

both of the 325 e36's ive owned have been before this date

first one - 10/91
second - 4/92

gotta love the non-vanos

Since you have a 318. And VANOS is on the 325. And the 4 cylinder 318 is not the same as the 6 cylinder 325-328. I'm going to say, no, it can't be added.

If you really, really, want VANOS, you would need to sell the 318 and buy a 325 (after 1992) or a 328, or a M3.

^^ and DISA I believe. that is a switching intake manifold technology with similar powerband effects as VANOS, though not as drastic.

now this is the shit right here:

just because the 318's don't have vanos it doesn't mean they are bad cars. they may not be power house machines, but then again neither are the 325's or 328's. the 318 is just a bottom end car for BMW. all manufacturers have a bottom end unit to sell. still nice cars.

and yes they still handle well

Want more HP for your 318? Downing Atlanta makes a supercharger system for the 318. Around 200 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque at the wheels for around $3350. Check with www.understeer.com.
