valve cover hose?

i was looking at my engine bay today and found 2 hoses coming out of the valve cover. the top one is a bigger hose and the bottom is the small one. my problem is i saw the bottom one (smaller) is completely destroyed and i want to know if this would be a problem or can i just keep on driving like this? also what is the function of this hose and what does it transfer like air or oil?

i think the smaller hose has something to do with air transfer, my brothers car had that thing all torn up and the car was acting up as if there was a clog in the fuel lines or something,

can i replace this with any kind of hose or does i t have to be from bmw? and also it does not have clamps do i have to use any when i change it?

i have been noticing that it feels like i loose power on 1st gear so im hoping this is the problem.

i dont think it has to be from bmw, i asked my brother today, he said, it had just come loose, and i dont remember seeing any clamps or anything ill check again if and when he gets home

changed it today with regular heater hose and now the car runs perfect, if you have a vacuum leak make sure you check this hose.
