My 1998 m3 just started reving at 2k upon ignition recently. It is doing this about every other time I start up.
It will stop if I give it a little bit of gas. If it tap the pedal it will rev higher (of course), but then immediatley drop down to its normal idleing RPM of 1k.
lubricate the spring on the throttle body and try to lubricate the throttle cable as best as possible with graphite. (using oils can attract dirt and do the opposite of what you want to do in the long term)
I have had a similar problem. It comes and goes. Car will occasional rev and have a very high idle until I tap the gas. Once or twice, I've not even been able to start my car. However, I notice that if I drive my car really hard for just a few minutes (full gas up to redline while getting on an interstate etc) then the problem stays away. Mine also can get a weird little idle issues where it will jump a bit, which makes me think my injectors or other part of my fuel system might have some funk in it because 44k (or whatever it is) fuel injector cleaner seemed to help for a while. But once again, hard driving seems to even it out... seems kinda weird, dog the car for a bit and it works better! Guess mine is just a glutton for punishment.
Interesting case, I think I am going to try to clean the ICV first and see what happens. I found a pretty good how to guide online specifically for m3's so it shouldnt be too hard.
I'll report back if that doesnt solve the problem.
