Unidentified Speaker Under Steering Wheel

This speaker is not part of the car sound system... however it serves some function for auditable warnings from my 318is. The problem is that it's always making cracking/static noise... even when the car is turned off and NO key in the ignition. ANYONE experienced this problem... should I just pull the plug on this irritating speaker?

Probably for the 'lights on' reminder or something similar. I'd guess the problem is the wiring is bad and it's shorting out. If you know how to get to the wires, look at them and try wrapping them in electrical tape; otherwise, try unplugging it, drive your car for a week and see if you miss it.

yeah its the chime. where you hear the ding, ding, ding, that lets you know of various reminders. you can unplug it
