you've revived a dead thread, and he hasn't been active for around 2.5 years now so i doubt he will be answering you question. most of the time you won't get much help like this, but if you open a new one you'll get alittle more help. just a friendly tip! and welcome to the boards!
that being said, STEVE8511 said the dealer told him a new transmission would fix it. i don't fully understand the problem but sometimes you can simply have the transmission rebuilt for a lot better deal. if i were you, i'd go that route rather than purchasing a new tranny (well, of course if you find a good deal on a new tranny that changes things,
). but if the dealer told him that then i'd assume it to be pretty reliable.

My 92 325i has the "electronic shift control" light illuminated on the dash. When this happens the transmission defaults to 3rd and 4th gear only. Both the dealer and another auto repair shop say the trouble is two part: 1) The transmission is slipping and 2) Pressure regulator is shorted to ground. They claim I need a new trans from BMW at a cost of $3600. Anyone ever had this trouble? I am trying to figure out if it's worth it to buy a rebuilt trans from BMW or have the local mechanic rebuild it.
