transmission slipping

I have a 1993 320I and my problem is my transmission will not engage the fifth gear when i put it on 'D', i cannot go past 70Kph without causing my transmission to constantly slip!...however when i put it on '4' then there is no slippage... also another question: can the transmission control module cause the transmission to slip? cause lately the indicator light on my tcm have been coming on! thanks for any help! I went to the dealer and they told me that i will need to put in a new transmission...

Internal clutch wear in most cases will be the cause of slipping.....& considering your bimmer being 15 years old & if the mileage is high, this is very likely.......so it seems like the trans will need replacing......

slipping in a single gear at any range of throttle is potentially a problem with the transmission itself. i would get a proper mechanic to diagnose that issue because it could be costly or something simple that we can only guess at.
