Transmission Questions

Hey,

So I need a new transmission ghead

I'm looking at buying one out of a wreck and having my friend (tech @ BMW Store) rebuild it at his house for me... Good news is I was planning to park the car for the winter anyways.

Now comes the tricky part... I was planning to eventually do an M3 swap anyways. I feel bad dumping this money into a new tranny when I'll need to pull it for an M3 swap a year down the road.

Can I buy a used M3 tranny at this point and put it into my 325is so that I'm one step closer? I understand that you can but other parts are needed. What parts?

The BMW techs are great for straight forward jobs, but when it comes to converting, they don't have much experience...

ah this is a good question, honestly its very tough considering i was in a similar situation. in any case it really depends geoff some people will give you the M3 motor with the tranny and not part them, so consider that first, secondly how bad is your tranny now? will it hold up another year?

Don't m3's and 328's have the same transmission? ZFT or something and the 325 have a getrag?

Well the tranny's leaking slowly and making clunking noises... My buddy says I could do a year on it, but I don't want to get stranded somewhere...

We've figured it out. When I park my car in November, we're gonna pull the tranny and cover the car for a month. He's going to plug away at rebuilding my current tranny for me.

Still plans for a swap, but going to wait a few years...
