If I turn the car off and then back on a few times it will go off and run just like normal. What the hell is going on?* * ghead |
You have a problem with the transmission control module or the transmission itself. Need to find someone to diagnose the problem.

The tranny has speed sensors that normally fail due to wear and dirt that gets on them, so the light comes on because the computer cant read speed, turning the car off and on just resets the system, like on windows, ( YEs i know it may be stupid, but this is standart procedure on new cars, when electronics freeze, restart them). Anyway, the sensor goes bad, computer doesnt know what happens, and so it goes into failsafe mode, stays in 3rd gear.
This is very common on e34, but on their case, the dash cam display failsafe. transmission problem. On e36, well there is no such wonder, just a dum light.
Of course it can also be module itself or something inside the tranny. best bet is to go to dealer, since you need a modic to pull codes from tranny. Aftermarket code readers only read engine codes. Then see if its a cheapo sensor, or something else, but most of the time, its a small stupid sensor..
