Tranny Swappin...

My tranny is going out... slipping going into third and doesn't even go in.. goes straight from 2nd to 4th... so I hate autos and wanted to go to a manual... Has anyone ever done this? And what should I look for or becareful about? I found this tranny on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=2475906380 and it seems to be a decent deal... guy said it's got less then 90k miles on it and I've got a good friend who used to work at a bmw dealership who said he'd put it in for cheap.. but I'm worried about some of the other things I'll need or run into problems with... any info on this would be awesome...A local BMW place here in town quoted me 2500 for the swap with a used tranny and a short shifted but I'm not sure if that's worth it... input is appreciated

AUTO to Manual Tranny swap is a bitch. Specially for people, who are paying to get the work done. If you are mechanic(Nutty one)then I would understand.

Now, to get it done, you will need the following major replacement with lot of other work.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NEW FLYWHEEL with assembly
CLUTCH with assembly
Clutch Cylinder/Master
Clutch fork
Tranny mounts
Modification to fit the third pedal.
Third pedal it self.
Drive shaft
Shifter linkage
Shifter it self with the kit
REAR DIFFERENTIAL which is suitable for MANUAL. The auto differential will be too quick and short. It will make your car jerky and will limit your speed to 90-98MPH since the ratios are too small.

Plus labor for the work.
May be couple things more which I might be forgetting .

Sounds like ALOT of work and $$$$$ better get it fix....sell it...then buy a 5spd....save yourself the headache and long downtime......i dunno

Interesting, mine is slipping in 3rd gear too... if I put it in manual mode (so it wont upshift), let off the throttle so that the wheels put negative torque on the transmisssion, it will lock into gear.

yup...exactly same thing as mine...I hate auto's...

If you are starved for a project to devote the next SEVERAL days of your life to, check [THIS] out. Not only could they help convert your auto to a manual, but while your at it, go for a six speed!!!

BTW, that company is awesome, they prepared my car!!
