trading for a 94 325i, need help with differentiating vanos and ticking tensioner

i was actually thinking about trading my car for a 94 325i too and i was listening to the engine and i heard a ticking as well. I was trying to listen as much as i can and it sounded like it was coming front the front the timing cover, i was thinking maybe it might be the timing tensioner or maybe the guides inside the timing cover? also, there was like sludge and a little bit of build up in the inside of the valve cover, i was scared it mightve been a blown headgasket but it wasnt white residue, it was like sludge and i smelled the oil and checked it. Oil was black and the car didnt smell like it was burning oil or running rich. please help me guys, its a really nice bmw and it has the widebody on it.. Thanks and God Bless..

Just might need a good oil flush... Sounds like its just been topped up in its recent life !!!
If you go for the flush then get a paint brush (with some thinners) and a scraper to get rid of the sludge before you flush...
