i just got a whole sunroof mechanism.. basically the rails and motor in one complete piece and i was wondering if anyone had any tips, links to diy's and such..
well i already have a sunroof in my car its just it has problems with tilt and closing so the admin from another forum let me know he was selling his sunroof and a/c comp so i got a deal but now my only problem is how to take mine out and put his in
...i hope these help you out. sorry i ddin't respond sooner, i thought someone else would have some suggestions, but these should guide you through everything i think.
well as for the headliner, i have never removed one, and can not find a diy e36 headliner removal, alothough i did find a few helpful links. they are for e38 7 series bimmers, but i think you can be flexible and use them maybe cause i'm absolutely sure they e36 and e38 will have the same basic assembly/disassembly steps. I hope these will help you, sorry i couldn't find any e36 diy's.
It's quite easy, goes in the same way as it went out.
Remove your sunblock things, the hand things for your passenger and back passengers and remove the ceiling. Then see you a lot of torque screws on the sides, from front to back, get them all out. Only thing you have to watch is the control for the sunroof, it's mounted with 2 torque screws, only one is longer (the back one). If you put in back the wrong way, you get a dent in your roof.
Second thing is make 300% sure that your drainage systems is connect good, with the copper clamps. If you don't do this right, you get a very wet car... from the inside.
The rest is simple, only fits one way and is automatically good. One tip: Buy a new rubber, that comes between the inside of your roof and the outside of your sunroof. Also install this after everything is mounted before you put in this rubber..
Last thing: Make absolutely sure you have an replacement roof ( you can check, there is a BMW label with a 5x xxxx partnumber on it).
If it's blank, no label on it, than it's an original roof, and eventually you'll have..... yes, the same problem...
Good luck! You can allways mail me for further questions, did it myself, I'm not that tecnical, but not a complete fool with a screwdriver, dismounted one from a wreck, got out the panel itself, let it get a repaint, put it back in, and put the whole thing back in the car. Took me 2 hours, works very smooth now
Usually the headliner is mounted to a piece of plastic/foam type panel. At least it was in the e46 that I took apart last week. Be very careful if it is a one piece panel that you do not snap it or crease it as you don't want to have to find a new one.

he is talking about removing the headliner (the clothe part above your head that extends the underside of the roof, not sure if you didn't understand what part the headliner was or why he waws removing it, but anyways) in order to replace the "ENTIRE" sunroof. he has already stated that he has "ALL" of the parts and is doing a complete reinstall. i've never replaced on myself,so whether the headliner coming out is a must, i'mnot sure, but i mean the diy's i gave you earlier should contain all the info nessecary to replace your sunroof.
if you need mroe help please be more specific as we can only help you with as mucha s we understand you are asking,

Aaaaah... oke
Now I get it...
You should spray the whole bowden cable that runs from the front to the back on both sides, it's the U-shape where the lifter and tilt runs trough. This makes sure it runs smoothly. Make sure it's clean to. Mine came from a car that ran in to an oak, so there was a lot of sand in it.
The headliner isn't working as it should be anymore, because it doesn't move back and forward with the movement of the roof. Some minor adjustment by hand will sort this out, it also has some advantage. If I want more fresh air when the roof is on the vent-modus I just move it back, normaly you can't do this.
