timing belt or chain

does the 325 or 328 have a timing chain or belt? if its a belt how hard is to change?
and when? Also with oil changes does anyone do it themselves? do you need anything special. ive always done oil changes myself. just curious. thanks

I just went to change mine on a 1.9l and found that engine has a timing chain and not a timing belt. I have two belts and both are accessory belts. I found that the large one is in good shape and did not need to be changed. The smaller one needs to be changed. When I got my oil done they were going to do it but could not because they needed a metric allen wrench to loosen the tention pully. They did not have it.

I posted to ask if anyone knew what size it was but no one responded. I do not think it is hard once you release the tention on the belt. Maybe someone can give us both some information...

all the newer 24v I-6's are chain driven, which would include e36-e46 323,325,328, and 330's

All e36 have timing chains and you never have to change it. To do the belts for the compressor all you need is to losen the 13mm bolts on the tensioner and tighten them when you are done(with the belt tight of course). Some engine may be different.

The oil filter cap is held in place by a 10mm bolt, and i think the drain plug is well. My car's had other work done on it the last couple of times it needed a change so I havent changed it in awhile. if the drain plug is not 10 its 13.
