You can tell by checking a few things, is it worse in the morning or when you first start the car and then slowly it gets a bit better ?

If you give the car a good a hard run dooes it get louder ?

Is it worse at idle and as the revs and your speed builds it subsides ?

if you have answered yes to most these questions then yup id be going down the lifter route.

Check your oil... very common on high mileage E36s.... Its normal.. as long as you keep the oil level right.

This fall along the same lines as vanos noise.. it just happens with these engines...
