Thermostat

Installing a new thermostat today in my e36 and want to make sure I put it in the right way. Is the little mark on the thermostat suppost to be pointing up towards the hood( straight up) or toward the vent in the thermostat housing(towards the drivers side, 2 o'clock position roughly)?

Note: The little mark you talking about (arrow engtraved on the thermostat)should point up when you reinstall it in your block. This is your guide/orientation of the vent hole. I like to coat that odd looking gasket on the housing with some antifreeze prior to reintalling......
