Can anyone explain to me what this test is:-

when i put my finger on the mileage reset button in the instrument binnacle and turn the ignition key to position 1. can anyone explain to me what the cycle is it goes through.

it starts of at what i suspect is test 01 and onwards upto test 06.

in each of these up to the last one it brings up numbers where the mileage is normally

cheers

Hmm, most people who have their E36's don't know about this little trick... it ain't exactly useful to me in any way, except you get to see the speedometer at 140 :P It's some diagnostic test, not sure what the use is of it. I think it helps display your VIN number or something...

Try this:
1) Turn off engine
2) push the trip odometer reset button and hold it
3) turn on the ignition to start up the electrical components (position 1)
4) let go of the button and watch the instrument panel, it'll show a few things

How do you think I got my avatar with the speedometer being so high? heh, not in my 318i.

I did this trick on an empty tank, then filled up my car and showed me having no gas, with the gas light on. I did the trick again and it read my gas correctly. I just thought that was weird.
