1995 325is with 235 000 Kms. Rad and temperature gauge were changed at dealer in April 2005 along with waterpump. Coolant level is fine.
When sitting car warms up to 50% or mid-point between blue and red on the gauge. Once you start driving the temperature dips back into the blue (cold).
Checked the sending and returning hoses to the heater core and they're hot. Some heat does come through the heating vents but very little compared to what it used to do. HVAC system works fine.
I picked up the car in May so I wouldn't know if this was a problem last year and I can't reach the previous owner.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
Don't want to go through a Montreal winter without heat.
thanks. e36surge

You don't have to unless you want to upgrade to alluminum one which will prevent the cracking from the cheap plastic one.
I forgot, have you checked for leaks?

but i had the same problem on my accord and i found that the lever was semi-jammed in the engine and i had to grease the end of it so that when i rotated the blower switch it would actually open up all the way

Yeah, I would say thermostat. I did mine recently. I had the same symptoms. Quick job, but you need to take the fan off. If you didn't ask them to change the thermostat, they might not have. I didn't bother with the aluminum housing. The thermostat I got looked different than what was in it, so don't be alarmed.
The thermostat in my bosses new X5 failed before it reached 2 years old or so.
