Well, i just bought the car used, i have a E36, 318i, and i noticed that the temp gauge runs 1/4 over the normal level, then when i drive the guage goes back to the middle of the guage, only when im idle, is when it gets hot...is this a fan problem or something more..?!??!
could be that you might need a new fan clutch (yes our cars have fan clutches) turn the engine on and look under your hoo,d noticed the fan, look at it from the side and try to see if u see it "wabbling"

Yikes! no way, not normal! Could be any number of things. Did you get it checked out or anything before u got it? Definately take it into a mechanic, pronto. If it isn't a problem with your engine (but it's my guess that it is), it is still putting a lot of tear on your engine.
In case the car's a total peice, you probably don't want to get your hands dirty (that was not on purpose, lol) by tinkering with it yourself just yet, so go to a mechanic to at least diagnose the thing.
