My sunroof seems to be jammed... I know its not a blown fuse because I can still hear the motor when I press the button to open.

What are the most commen causes of this?

By using that finger in your avatar Press-in your sunroof button and hold it in for a little while-LOL- it should reset itself if all systems-including George's check OK. It is in your manual if you still have it.
good luck

hey man sorry for that,
to fix that you can try looking for the procedure on the net, e36 sunroof fix etc.. like google..

but it never shows good reasults..

what i will tell you is this, it is very hard for me to explain the little details about fixing the sunroof, with no pics and only words. i dont have pictures of when i fixed mines.

the best source of information for this is to get the BMW ETK cds, they sell them on ebay, look for BMW ETK, and get the latest version and one that includes TIS, TIS is the technical service manual from BMW, thi sis factory information.

on the software, they have procedures on how to do any kind of internal service to the sunroof mechanins,

im sorry for not beign able to explain torugh here, but is because the only way to learn it is with pics and with the unit in fornt of you..

i do recomend you to get all the sliders and moving parts on the sunroof system replaced, it will run about 200 but is will make the sunroof to work like mew..

make sure you lube all the parts during assembly to ensure good sliding.

Again man sorry for tellign you to get the cds, but once you get this cds youll see that it will help on this issue and any other issue with the car.,

and since to replace the wires you will have to remove the sunroof cassete form the car, this means taking headliner out and all, is a good time to replace any broken trim pieces.

anyway man, if you have any questions while youre doing the procedure, just ask me, but make sure you have a big falt surface to work with the unit.. it makes the job eaiser.

dont be afraid,
have a good one.

HEY ON EMORE THING BEFORE YOU EVEN DO ALL THAT SUFF UP THERE..
I FORGOT TO MENTION..

IT CAN HAPPEN THAT THE GEAR MECHANISM THAT DRIVES THE CABLE GET WORN OUT, BECAUSE IS A PART MADE OF COPPER, OR WEAK METAL..

TO CHECK THIS, OPEN THE COVER TO THE MOTOR ON THE CAR. THEN UNSCREW THE MOTOR FORM THE SUNROOF CASSETE AND TAKE IT OUT, AND INSPECT THE GEARS, LOOK FOR BROKEN OR WORN TOOH.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TO MOVE THE MOTOR ONCE ITS OUT, BECUSE YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE IS BACK TO THE NEUTRAL POSITION, MEANING CLOSED POSITION..

IF YOU WANT TO MOVE IT, JUST MAKE SURE IT STOPS ON THE SAME EXACTLY PLACE.

IF THE MOTOR HAD GOOD LOOKING TOOH THEN YOULL HAVE TO GO FOR THE REST..

IF YOU DONT MIND, SEND MY A PIC OF HOW THE GEAR LOOKS, SO I CAN TELL YOU IF ITS WORN OR NOT, IN CASE YOURE IN DOUBH

see ya.

ahahah
no when youre just opening the rear part of it, the interrior part will only open by a couple of inches.. the function of the rear opening is to work as an exaust for interior air. that is why it opens a little on the interior.

Hahaha
all i know is from working on my car, since day one i've been doing all work on it and i just love it. When i got the car it had all those little things to get fix., suspension,. full engine tuneup and interior anying things that do happen after 100k.
i see the car like a big lego set, i used to play a lot with legos, but anyway./
once i got the car, some tools, and BEntley manual with the BMW Etk cds, i just went i did whatever i could to get a great working car..
and i dont regret it, i have a great working e36 with 122k and rolling strong. and i also learned a lot during the process.

the reason why i know about the sunroof, is becuase i was having the same anying issues, and after looking on web and not finding useful information, i just pulled the sunroof cassete out and rebuilt it with all new moving parts, so ive learned how the system works and also got a new perfectly working sunroof.

anyway, i only know what i have fixed on my car, and i enjoy helping others..

well have a good one,
