strut mounts

Guys, I was wondering when are strut mounts due for replacement since my car is now 8 years old and the shocks are near due. I'm planning to do it myself and have them both replaced since I'm pulling down the whole assembly.

Other than a visual inspection, is there another way to tell when you need this work? Are there audible noises associated with this, or does it just feel like your shock(s) is/are really shot?

As well, what is involved with the cutting and the welding...

I have heard that some added squeeks and rattles accompany this problem. But I would say visual is the best way to check.

I will be doing this something this weekend.

We very rarely need to replace any at all. Most of the ones we do replace are due to body damage.
