Ok, I start my car and notice this strange noise for the first time. To describe it at best would be to compare it to a dentist drill but louder. It is originating from under the car by the passenger rear wheel area..the car doesn't put out any fault codes, but im thinking it's the fuel pump?? The car seems to run fine to me except for the dentist drill/ plane landing gear coming down noise..anyone?

Try just turning your key to the "ON" position... in a lot of the E36s the fuel pump on one of the few things that is energized in the "ON" key position. If you get that same sound.. then its probably your fuel pump... after a while they get loud... then after another while.. they will die.. I've had one die before... not cool.. same your self some time and money.. and go a head and buy a new one and go to pelicanparts.com and look for the DIY on replacing the fuel pump...

Good Luck..

Remember.. make sure you get someone else out there to give you a second ear towards trying to find out what is wrong... this is just a guess to what might be wrong..

Again... Good Luck

Les

Turned key to on- no noise at all..start the car up- the noise appears..turn off and turn to ON- the noise is present for about 2 seconds and then stops..start car again- noise appears again..

*UPDATE*- I let the car sit all Sunday, come out this morning and the noise is gone.. there is a slight hum or buzz but I think it all sounds normal now. Nothing like before..Dont you love it when the car fixes itself!!

I would record the noise but it is gone now..I am almost positive it's fuel pump related. I had gone down to "E" like 30 miles left to go on the on-board comp range function and put 10 bucs in at a shell gas station that i had never gone to before. On my way to work after that, the noise started. After work i filled up w/ 93 mobil and let the car sit. 24 hours later the sound is gone. The noise was a really loud hum/buzz. So im gonna chalk this one up as problem solved, but monitor of course and take alpine's advice of replacing the unit all together as precautionary main..
