I just got a 97 318is from my buddy who leaves for Iraq next week. i see on the Radio that their is 2 little side flaps that open up and have a single little hole in them. i was wondering if i needed a special tool to put in their to take the radio out or if i can just find a car tool that i already have and just use that. thanks for the help.

two kinds of radio used on your model....
1) the Bavaria type; and,
2) the Commercial type.

i suppose you have the Bavaria type(by your description)... the flaps at teh side should show 2 holes-upper and lower.

u can fashion ur unlocking tool using coat hanger wire- shape it in a "U" so u can poke both holes simultaneously ( u'll need two of these- one for each side of the radio). push your "U" tool in and radio should come out

does this work the sameway on 1996 328is. it only has one hole on each side of the radio

If you look in the holes do you see a screw/hex? The screws do not actually "come out". You turn them counter-clockwise until they stop but dont force them when they stop. Then the radio will slide out. It sometimes seems like you are spinning forever but make sure it stops spinning.
