| I recently bought a 95 318 is. When the weather is cool (below 65F) the 5 speed is very stiff for the first few miles I drive before loosening up. I have to force it into each gear, and there's a bit of a grind when I get it in gear. This is especially bad in first. I took it to a mechanic to check fluids and he said that the transmission lubricant was fine, but I suspect he might not have checked and was just shining me on since I asked him as an afterthought. I guess my question is: is this stiffness normal, or is there something amiss with the tranny?
The car also has another issue that might be related. Sometimes, when I put the shifter in first gear at a dead stop, it jumps out of gear as I let out the clutch. This is accompanied by a loud thump that does not sound good at all. If I put the gear into first while the car is rolling this doesn't happen. Is this as bad as I suspect it is? I'd appreciate any ideas. |
