It's been a while that I've been feeling and sometimes hearing a mild clunck down the steering column, as the car is standstill and the engine is running, turning the steering wheel right and left and sometimes when driving over very rough surfaces. The clunck is not felt as I drive over smooth roads. As the steeirng column is very hard to reach and inspect, I took the car to BMW dealership and they decided the U-joint is worn and that everything else is perfect. They gave a repair estimate of $500
Before I shed my hard earned dollars I took the car for a second opinion to a general mechanic shop. They lift the car up and showed me that the U-joint is totally fine. They could not tell where the clunck is coming from but they assumed it is from the inside of rack and pinion and that this might be a normal thing on these cars

And again everything else in the suspension looks great.
Now am I the only owner of an e36 who complained about such an issue?
Thanks
