Starter Problem

My car's starter is not working (E36:1994 325 IS). When I turn the ignition key I hear a "click" and sometimes there is a grinding noise for a second or two. Replaced the battery with a new one but the problem remains. Please help

Does the grinding sound definately come from the starter? If so, have you recently replaced it ? If you have, is it an OEM starter?

Sometimes if you are in a jam to get the car started, you can simply "tap" the starter with a hammer or similar heavy object.

The starter has never been replaced in this car. the grinding noise is rare and i am not sure if its the starter thats making it.

I shall try tapping it with a hammer, as soon as if figure out where the starter is. Thanks for the help

Also you can isolate the problem by trying to compression start the car if you can then that means it is not something else. Just a shot in the dark.
