Starter motor turns but dont fire!

Hi all.....I have a bmw3181 se.....1995
The trouble is when i got to start her the starter spins but the engine dont
fire.
I got an feeling that either the starter motor cog is chipped or worn or the fly wheel is chipped.
I'm hoping it is not the later and that it's the cog on me starter.
If this is correct can anyone tell me if i can get the starter cog without buying the
whole stater motor? and if so where?
