1997 328i 165,00 miles. How long do starters last. Car starts up fine in morning. But after driving around and parking and car is hot. I put it in neutral and it does not start. It makes a wheezing type start sound but engine does not turn over. So I pump the clutch and move the gear shift lets say to first and then it will start. A mechanic looked at it and said its the starter. Is there any way around it or should I just replace it. He said it may continue this way for a while or it may not start at all one day. With summer coming a figure I better get it done.

I would buy the starter if I were you. 165,000 miles is a good run, but you know that if you ignore it you will wind up at the most inconvenient location possible and she wont crank.
