I have a 99 328i and it started doing weird things. First the A/C fuse kept blowing, then the left front indicator, ABS and traction control lights come on, and the speedometer stopped working. Code P0500 comes out to be a "speed sensor malfunction" which apparently could be the root as it would cause a short. I have ordered one ($41) but now need to know where to find it to replace it! Thanks.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR = it's the rear right wheel speed sensor. It provides the input to ABS & ECM for vehicle speed limiting, and idle speed regulation.
*could be just a disconnected line or dirty sensor surface ;-)
Sadly, that was not the sensor that the AutoZone analysis showed needed replacing. It was certainly more accessible if it had been that one. The one that they gave me is located above the transmission. However, I finally got it to someone with a more expensive computer that identified the problem to be with the ABS computer. Once that was replaced ($1,200 - sigh) the fault codes went away and the speed sensor ($41) was returned...
