Spedometer & Odometer Intermittently quit working

I have a 99 e36 M3 and every once in a while, my spedometer stays at zero and my odometer quits working. But everything else seems fine. After w while, it all begins working again. The dealer wants to charge me $200 just to look at the car. Does not include labor and part if they try to fix it. Can anyone help?

check the fuses?

could very well be that your gonna need a new gauge cluster, but if everthing else is working ok, its tough to say, try checking the fuses, if thats ok, id suggest investigating further,, come back and update us if the fuse is ok (like completely ok , it could ahve snapped but still touching)
