They did. I haven't heard anything bad about them. If you want the sequential shifting, go for it, I'd say. But do some more research. I haven't had direct experience with SMGs on the E36. I can't imagine BMW putting it out if they hadn't done their homework first. However, they have used GM automatic transmissions on the 3-Series, so who knows.

I guess I might have been wrong to encourage you to get it. I personally prefer a six-speed manual to an SMG. Since there appear to be problems with that gearbox anyway, I'd say wait and find yourself a manual transmission M3.

That's right, the SMG I was offered on euro m3s in the later model years, and was horrible. It shifted extremely slow and had tons of problems.
I think that the SMG is a fine invention, just not for me. The SMGs in the current e46 m3 is just amazing. It shifts extremely fast... I can't wait to see the new m5 SMG! If I had to take an auto or a SMG, I'd take the SMG.
Unfortunately, BMW M cars will be going to the SMG from now on, as the M5 and M6 are already SMG, the next M3 will be SMG. Manuals the most fun, tho.
