Talking Slideways

Ok ladies and gents,

Now that the beastie is up and running, I need to get working on her again. My goal is to make a car that can be used in a drift competition but also a daily driver. So. Here's what i wanna do, yeah i know, I need suspension. I'm workin on it. What I need from you fine, upstanding people, is either a website with possible engine swaps for the 318Is. I need torque, and lots of it. I'm honestly pretty new to the engine swap idea so, if any one could point me in the right direction of the process of things I'd appreciate it. I know that with any engine swap, you're generally gonna need a new cluster, ecu, exhaust, and possibly a new tranny. If I'm missing anything, lemme know.

Now to the first thing every one is probably gonna ask... Price range. Throw it to the wind. Give me everything from the cheapest power boost, to the newest, most high tech engine set up out there, AS LONG AS YOU THINK some one with a moderate ammount of mechanical experience could do it. I have access to lifts, any tool known to man, and as a judge of my mechanical skills, I work on helocopters for the USMC.

If you guys need anything else, please, by all means, let me know. I check this forum SEVERAL times a day.

So hook it up. I have faith that this community will help me spawn a true monster.

if money was no option i would go with the S50 from the m3...awesomeness...

once you get the S50 in there, or at least in I-6, i would supercharge it...

you have the 4-cyl right? if you don't want to yank out the engine right away...

for drifting i would remove weight (spare tire, relocate battery...that kind of stuff), stiffen chassis...oh yeah, and post pics!

wait, how much of a daily driver do you want it to be? do you want it to be a grocery getter or just you and a chick?

She's a stock 318is right now so yes, i'm sitting with a 4cyl pos engine that not much can be done with. I like the idea of the M3. I know that the 97 m3 has the same chassis and I'm fairly confident in that engine fitting rather easily in my chassis. Can you give me a few engine designations, ((you know, S50, M42, etc.)), sites to grab them from, and possibly a relative cost.

It's mostly gonna be me and a chick, so two seats and the trunk for groceries when I need em. We live 500 feet from the store so I dont' really need alot of space. What kind of weight reduction would you suggest?

When i get pics, I'll post em. She looks like a POS right now cause I nearly stripped the inside out and am fiberglassing my own pannels, I honestly dont need a super car, I want something that will look decent, ((nothing flashy, just not look like a beater)), and go relatively fast and sideways when I want her to. I used to drift under a contract so it won't be hard making her go sideways once I can actually get the tires to break loose.

i think you're going to end up spending a lot more money doing an engine transplant than buying an m3 and doing some mods. maybe a turbo or charger kit for you're 318 would give you the hp you need to do some nice drifting. either way i think it would be a fun project to get into. good luck with whatever you decide to do, hopefully some guys on here will have some sites for you to look at

I bought the car VIA loan and still owe too much money to just get an M. Granted I'd love one, but no. To date, I haven't been able to find a turbo that is made for the 318 that doesn't cost more than my car. I'm not a huge fan of superchargers, but if it will deliver the goods, then by all means. If you could shoot me a link or two showing some turbo's and super chargers, I'd appreciate it. I've actually got access to a small supra turbo and intercooler, so, I -could- use that but I'd need to find headers and the specs on how much psi they'd put out. I'm not highly intelligent in that area and could use some help. If you have anything to offer in that area, i'd be greatly appreciative.

The 240sx I used to run in competitions was n/a so i don't know an exceeding amount about turbos. I know it's a turbine mechanisim driven by the exhaust and exhaust pressure, but i dont know how to tune it to get what i need out of it. As far as I know, you just bolt the damn thing on and you're done with it.

I am always willing and eager to get schooled in some tech, so if you have any info to give me that you think may be relative, I'd be more than willing to listen.

to keep it short, superchargers are good for steady constant boost.

small turbos have boost in the drivable range...

and large turbos have holy-shit-oh-my-god power in the high rpm range...which is usually where you are when drifting...

but to keep it drivable i would suggest a supercharger...

I hope you have lots of money. Drifting is an expensive hobby.

As for the swap: if you're gonna do it, swap a LS1 into it.

Yes, I know that drifting is costly. I used to do it under a contract. Was told that I would still be under the contract when I got out of the Marines. And as for the paying for the car thing, why not get a head start on it while I can. I understand the paying for something that is broken and not running, but the fact of the matter is, I've got 60 vacation days to spare. I don't mind not having the car for a week or three.
