Ok, so my leather shift boot needs replacement. I've always loved the chrome shift gates from the Lambos and Ferraris. So I want my own.
Has anyone ever seen this done before for an e36?
If you haven't, does anyone have the EXACT measurments of the movement of the shift lever into R,1,2,3,4,5? How far is moves from each position so I could make my own and possibly a template for others to use.
Thanks for the help

I have thought about that in the past too, I know the shifter would have to be thin as hell because the ones we have have a good bit of girth to them...If you think of something let us know that would be awesome!

Yeah, I know the shifter is pretty beefy, but that's really the least of my worries. I was planning on turning it on a metal lathe and shearing some of it off, then finding a shift nob for it.
Mostly right now I'm concerned with the distances the shifter is moving. I think i'll take a piece of ply wood the same size as the ourside around the shifter, and hold it in one place as a move the shifter and have somebody else mark where it stops for each gear.
Then cut out the ply would and see if it is possible to do.
Anymore ideas?
Kevin

I don't remember where I saw it, but I do know someone makes, or at one time made, a shift gate for the e36. I too would like one and will join the search again, as my dog tore the boot yesterday.

Good idea but the gated shifter is really gonna slow down your shift times. You won't be able to move it diagonally to get into 3rd and 5th you will have to follow the gate.

Buy some earplugs too. Did you ever feel the vibration of the manual stick shift while driving? Don't spend your money for this little piece of aluminum sheet!

That's sweet, but my dad has already gotten me a new shift boot and nob so I don't need replacement anymore. Oh well, good luck to anyone else who tries. 250 is pricey, make it yourself.
