I have a 325i Auto, recently i have noticed the RPM needle jumping. This morning the needle started jumping the engine light appeared and then the car seemed to be stuck in a high gear (i was in D (drive)). This has happened before and was fixed by turning the car off, however i don't think this is quite correct.

Can anyone advise what could be the problem

There could be a few reasons why that is happening. Some causes could be throttle postion sensor, fuel injection system, mass air system. You mave to take it to a pro for help.
